Sampha has been a favorite of mine since 2011 when I fist heard SBTRKT‘s ‘Hold On‘, I have been patiently awaiting the release of his stand-alone debut for about two years, and it’s finally here. I mean not to sound like a fan-boy, but he possesses talent that I, a complete stranger to him appreciate the time and effort he does to do what he does. On his debut ‘Dual’, which was released, this past July showcases his skills as a vocalist and producer. While most write ‘Dual’ off as another R&B album, I look at this record more so of the mind of genre bending Chameleon switch up old soul influences for the modern man. The texture of his voice throughout the 6-song project shows similar passion seen in many singers of the past. While this album is a bit slower than his unofficial album ‘Sundanza’ it still serves as another side to his overall sound. ‘Indecision’ which was uploaded on his soundcloud in 2011 still sounds as fresh today as it did then. But the newest addition like ‘Can’t Get Close’ also showcases the well-written lyrics to accompany his voice. While my only concern is that album clocks in for about 17 minutes it’s still worth the listen.

You can purchase ‘Dual’ via Young Turks.
